About Tim Tebow - An Open Letter to John Elway

Mr. Elway,

I have been watching football since I was old enough to turn the channel on the television. I became a fan of the University of Florida when I began attending classes there in 1981. You are now discovering what we in the Gator Nation already know; Tim Tebow is not just a football player, he is a phenomenon.

He is a young man who refuses to compromise in an age when everything is negotiable. He wants to help make the world a better place in an age when people have a hard time believing anyone could really want such a thing. He is as competitive as any athlete that ever set foot on a playing field, but he still wants you to realize there is more to life than just winning games. If there are Tebow haters out there, it is not because they don’t want to be constantly reminded of what he is, but because they don’t want to be constantly reminded of what they aren’t.

He may not have a pretty throwing motion or a quick release like some of the NFL greats to whom has been compared, but he is the best I have ever seen at making the people around him better. On the field. And off.

That, Mr. Elway, makes him worth his weight in gold.

While Tim Tebow is the ultimate team player, he will not allow himself to be outworked by anyone. Your desire to see him continue to improve his ability to compete at the professional level does not and will not – ever - exceed his own desire to do so. I do not mean to imply that I have anywhere near the amount of football knowledge that you have, but I can assure you, as a Gator fan, I have watched Tim Tebow play more than you have. If I were in your position, I would not try to make him into what I want him to be. I would encourage him to continue being what he is. You, your organization, and its fans will be better as a result.

Cordially,

Brian R. Walker
