Lights, Cameras.... action?

A recent survey by the Wall Street Journal provided some interesting data. NFL games were the specific subject, but it's safe to assume that the numbers would be similiar for telecasts of college football.

Here are some of the results:

The average telecast of a football game is 174 minutes long.

During that time, viewers get about 60 minutes of commercials.  They also get to watch about 75 minutes of players huddling or standing around between plays.

Replays consumed 17 minutes.

How much time was devoted to actual football plays?  About 11 minutes.

The average play takes just 4 seconds, and the broadcast networks have become masters at filling the time between snaps.  Maybe that's why football has become the quintessential American television viewing sport; there's plenty of time to gorge on beer and pretzels without missing the action.
