Tebow Creates Havoc for Hitler

I had to post this video here because... ok... maybe it isn't in the best of taste, but it is funny. Imagine this...

Tebow Not Perfect After All, But He's BACK!

In the BCS Championship game, Tim Tebow proved that he is not perfect after all. (Then again, who is?) He threw two first half interceptions, doubling his season total. And he drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for this Gator Chomp directed at Sooner safety Nick Harris (video below):

As previously documented here, Harris was one of the Sooners shooting off his mouth before the game, and he was the classless piece of crap who purposely twisted Percy Harvin's injured ankle after a making a tackle. He probably deserved to be chomped by an actual 'gator.

While Tebow may not be perfect, he IS returning for his senior season at Florida - much to the delight of Gator fans everywhere, and much to the chagrin of Florida's future opponents. That news, combined with the fact that All-American linebacker Brandon Spikes is also coming backing for year four, means Tebow has a chance to complete the most amazing college football career ever. He has a decent chance at another Heisman Trophy, and very good chance at helping his team to a third national championship in four years. The strength of his character off the field has been well documented, but he has an opportunity to solidify his reputation on the field as well.

Some people may get tired of hearing all the hype for another season, but the college football world is better with Tebow in it.

Brandon Spikes

I should take this opportunity to talk a bit about Brandon Spikes. This Gator defense has no senior starters on it. None. Brandon Spikes is a junior, and the only player considered likely to leave early for the NFL. Brandon Spikes is to the defense what Tim Tebow is to the offense. If he decides to come back for his senior season, the Gator defense will be absolutely brutal.

Here is my favorite Brandon Spikes moment from this season:

The Message to Knowshon...

Major Wright Sets the Tone for the Gator Defense

I plan to post ALL kinds of fun things over the next several days just because I can. It's my blog, dammit, and my favorite team just won another national championship. I'm going to enjoy this!

The Sooners had never scored less than 35 points in a game, and averaged 54 points per game coming into this one - tops in the country in scoring this year, and, in fact, the most prolific scoring offense in the modern era of college football. But, in this game, not so much. They could only muster 14 points.

In this video clip, Florida's Major Wright sends an early message to Oklahoma receiver Manuel Johnson. I guarantee you, prior to this game, the Sooners hadn't seen a defense like this Gator defense.

My Crystal Ball Says...

...that I know who is going to win the BCS Championship game because, let's face it, my bowl predictions up until now have been spot on! Yeah, right.

Oklahoma vs Florida (BCS Championship Game)
For much of this season, I have written on the subject of the SEC versus the Big 12, offense versus defense, and so on. I wrote about it here, here, here, here, and here. I still thought there might be some room for debate. Are Big 12 defensive numbers so bad because the offenses are so good? Are SEC defensive numbers so good because the offenses are mediocre?

One thing finally changed my mind. Or, more accurately, two things. The Cotton Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. Despite spotting Texas Tech a 14 point lead, Mississippi DOMINATED the Red Raiders, and held them 10 points below their regular season scoring average. And Texas didn't look in any way spectacular against a very mediocre Ohio State team.

I could break down statistics, and all that garbage, but i think it comes down to this... There are three facets of the game; offense, defense and special teams. Even if you want to argue that Oklahoma's offense is better than Florida's, I think you must concede that Florida is better on defense and special teams.

I think Florida's play on special teams will win the game. I think Florida is a better team overall. I think this is the best defense Oklahoma will have seen all year. And I think Tim Tebow will play the game of his life.

Florida wins this one.

The Mystery of the Yellow Line

I came across this video today, and I thought it was absolutely fascinating. So, while you're waiting patiently for me to post my predictions for the Big Game tomorrow, you can check this out. It explains the technology behind the yellow first down line on telecasts of football games. Even after this explanation, I found myself wanting more information, so I clicked here for some detail that I found to be really helpful. In the meantime, enjoy!

The Burning Tuesday Question

How many times are we going to see crying Ohio State fans on TV before we realize what kind of choke artists they really are?

They could have, and SHOULD have, won that game, They beat the spread, but showed, once again, that they CAN NOT win the big game.

My Crystal Ball Says...

...that I know what will happen in this week's key games. Always remember that I'm right, and your team sucks.

This is the nearly complete edition of the special bowl season picks. Bet you can't wait until the next one, when I pick the BIG GAME!!

Texas vs Ohio State (Tostitos Fiesta Bowl)
I should be clear about one thing right now, if you've never read my blog before; I hate Ohio State. What's up with the sweatervest for Christ's sake? This isn't the back nine at the local country club. It's a football game. Having said that, I think Ohio State has a chance to win.

Texas has Colt McCoy. And, more and more, I'm starting to think HE should have won the Heisman. He completes an amazing 78% of his passes, and, oh by the way, he leads the team in rushing. Without him, the Longhorn offense wouldn't be worth a pile of prairie dog dung. They also happen to be one of the few Big 12 teams that plays something resembling defense (18th in the nation in scoring defense, 49th in total defense - the best national rankings of any Big 12 defense). On top of that, they are nine point favorites.

Here is why they are going to lose...

Buckeye running back Beanie Wells is healthy. They are a different team when he can pile up yardage on the ground. Add QB Terrelle Pryor's scrambling ability to that (since his passing ability is marginal - the Buckeyes are 105th in the nation in passing offense), and it makes for some serious defensive problems. In Ohio State's last three games - wins over Northwestern, Illinois and Michigan - they attempted 16, 10 and 16 passes, respectively. But in those same games, they rushed for 244, 305 and 232 yards, respectively, and scored 45, 30 and 42 points. If the Buckeyes can run with Wells and Pryor, keep Colt McCoy and the Longhorn offense on the bench, and avoid costly turnovers, they can, and will, win.

There is speculation that Jim Tressel will play senior Todd Boeckman at QB, at least part of the time. But he doesn't give the Buckeyes their best chance to win. Pryor does. If the sweatervest genius has any brains at all - and that is debatable - he will put the ball, and the game, in the hands of Pryor and Wells.

There is one other factor as well. The Texas kids can talk all they want, but I'm not convinced that they're excited to be in this game. Sure, they got screwed by the Big 12 with the tiebreaker formula that put Oklahoma in the league championship game despite the fact that Texas beat them in the regular season, but if they are going to spend the night sulking - like the stinking Crimson Tide did in the Sugar Bowl - they are going to lose like the stinking Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl.

I hate Ohio State. But I think they win this one. They can't possibly choke away three straight BCS bowl games, can they?

Ball State vs Tulsa (GMAC Bowl)
This is yet another bowl matchup that has the potential to be very entertaining. It is one of just six of this year's bowl games in which both teams have ten or more wins (Ball State is 12-1, Tulsa is 10-3).

Ball State QB Nate Davis is the real mccoy (not Colt). He is the MAC Player of the Year. He is 7th in the nation in passing efficiency. That is amazing. Guess who is ranked ahead of him. Tulsa QB David Johnson (2nd in the nation).

Both teams lost their conference championship games - Tulsa to East Carolina, Ball State to Buffalo. Tulsa comes into the game having lost three of their last five. The only blemish on Ball State's record was the disapointing loss to Buffalo.

This should be a fun, high-scoring affair. You have to like Tulsa's ability to score points. And you have to wonder if the Fighting Testes are still hurting from losing their bid for an undefeated season. I'll take the Golden Hurricane.

Premature Afterbirth (Part 2)

With three games remaining, I am now 11-15 in my bowl predictions. It will put a damper on my outstanding regular season record. It's a good thing I don't actually gamble. A REAL good thing. But it's been a great bowl season! I'll be sorrry when it's over. Having said that...

I was a bit disturbed that Nick Saban won coach of the year. I think there were more deserving candidates – Buffalo’s Turner Gill to start with. Yes, Alabama showed great improvement in their second year under Saban, but he was TOTALLY outcoached in the Sugar Bowl. First of all, it was clear that Alabama was not ready to play. It is somewhat understandable, given their disappointment in the loss to Florida. But Utah rushed for a net total of 13 yards in the game. 13 yards. But, more importantly, if I’m Alabama’s defensive coordinator, I decide, very early on, to do my best to terrorize Utah QB Brian Johnson. Send 5, 6 or 7 on every play. You’re Alabama! I would dare Utah to beat me with their ground game. They got 13 yards for God’s sake. 13 yards.

If you watched the Cotton Bowl, you saw Mississippi execute exactly that kind of defensive game plan against Texas Tech. They attacked Graham Harrell on every play. EVERY play. They dared Texas Tech to beat them on the ground, knowing full well that they couldn’t – despite Mississippi spotting them an early 14 point lead on two turnovers.

Give Utah credit. They played a great game, and are, indeed, better than most people thought. Nick Saban, and every one of his coaches and players should be ashamed.

My Crystal Ball Says...

...that I know what will happen in this week's key games. Always remember that I'm right, and your team sucks.

This is the semi-final edition of the special bowl season picks. My predictions have been downright abysmal, but you have to admit that this bowl season has been anything but predictable. It has been very entertaining, with only a few blowouts and several very close games. More on that later.

Texas Tech vs Mississippi (AT&T Cotton Bowl)
Texas Tech looks like the obvious pick here. They are 4th in the nation in total offense (536 ypg) and scoring offense (44.58 ppg). But one wonders what will happen when they face a defense that will actually try to stop them from scoring? Mississippi is, very quietly, 14th in the nation in total defense – 6th against the run, and they probably deserve more respect than they get. If they can avoid costly mistakes, I think they’ll earn that respect by winning this game.

East Carolina vs Kentucky (Auto Zone Liberty Bowl)
Kentucky started the season with lots of promise and a 4-0 record. They then lost to Alabama by just a field goal, but injuries, particularly on offense, have decimated the team. The Wildcats come into this game riding a three game losing streak, and QB Reggie Cobb is likely unavailable – still nursing a knee injury that required surgery. East Carolina started the season with surprising wins over Virginia Tech and West Virginia, then suffered through a three game losing streak and some midseason struggles. It is SO tempting to pick Kentucky because I do think that SEC teams (except this year’s South Carolina team) almost always deserve the benefit of the doubt. But I think the Pirates pull this one off.

Utah vs Alabama (Allstate Sugar Bowl)
These are two teams that play good defense, and Utah should be credited for having a great year, and, once again, finishing the regular season unbeaten. They’ve won twelve games, but they won’t win thirteen. Alabama has to be disappointed after grinding unbeaten through twelve and three quarters of regular season games before falling to Florida in the SEC Championship game. Alabama hasn’t played in the Sugar Bowl since the ’92 season – when they demolished Miami 34-13 to win a national championship. I think the Tide will, slowly but surely, grind the Utes into the ground.

Buffalo vs Connecticut (International Bowl)
This game might be interesting. Connecticut has the nation's top running back in Donald Brown (just under 152 ypg), but they limped into the finishing gate - going 2-5 since the end of September after starting 5-0. And if they get behind, they might be in trouble because it's quite possible that I might be a better quarterback than either of the guys who have played for the Huskies (106th in the nation in passing). Buffalo has to be one of the better feel-good stories of the season. They started the season 2-4, but finished 6-1, including a surprising 42-24 upset of Ball State in the MAC Championship game. And I suppose everybody now knows that this is their first bowl game ever. They were invited to the 1958 Tangerine Bowl, but declined the invitation when informed that their black players would not be allowed to participate. Head coach Turner Gill may not last much longer at Buffalo. In just his third year, he has them in a bowl game at 8-5. The school had a record of 10-69 in the seven years prior to his arrival. Connecticut should win this one, but I am going to pick Buffalo.
